Glossary

Just an informal glossary (a work in progress) to give you a general understanding of herbal shop talk.

Alteratives- Are also know as blood sweeteners because over time they correct impurities of the blood.

Anodynes – A pain relieving agent.

Astringents- Help to firm tissues and lessen discharges.

Cathartics- Help to evacuate bowels.

Cholagogues- Promote bile secretion from liver and gall ducts.

Demulcents- Mulilaginous herbs which soothe and protect inflammations.

Diaphoretics- Cause perspiration which releases toxins.

Diuretics- Increase urine flow.

Expectorants- Thin and expel mucous from the the trachea and lungs.

Nervines- An agent that calms the nerves.

Stimulants- Increase and/or normalizes circulation.

Sudorifics- Cause heavy sweating.

Tonics- Gives tone to the muscles especially those of the digestive track.

Vermifuges/Vermicides- Expel and kill worms in the intestinal tract. They are also know as Anthelmintics.
